Car floor mats: fit, backing and care
Floor mats take more abuse than anything else in the car — grit, salt, snow, coffee, dog hair. Here is what separates a mat that stays where you put it from one that ends up bunched under the pedals, and how our printed sets are made.
What the set contains
Our floor mats ship as a set of four: two for the front footwells, driver and passenger side, and two for the rear. They are printed edge to edge over a rubber backing that grips the carpet underneath and keeps the mat from sliding. A printed surface with a rubber backing is the practical middle ground: the print of a custom mat, the grip and the wipe-clean surface of a rubber one.
Trim to fit, in three passes
Universal mats are cut slightly larger than the smallest footwell they need to fit.
- Lay the mats in the footwell, print side up, with the backing flat against the carpet.
- Where a corner rides up the side of the footwell, mark or remember that edge and lift the mat out.
- Cut along the guide line on the underside with kitchen scissors, following the curve of the footwell. Put it back and trim again if you need to — you can always take more off, never less.
If your footwell is unusually deep, or the transmission tunnel is high, trim to the guide line rather than forcing the mat flat: a mat that is pushed into shape will lift at the corner and curl.
The one safety rule
Never stack printed mats on top of the mats your car came with. Two layers can slide against each other and bunch under the brake pedal. One layer only — take the factory mats out, store them, and put them back if you sell the car.
Cleaning
Shake them out, hose them down, or wipe with a damp cloth and let them dry flat. The print is bonded into the surface of the mat, so a winter of grit, salt and mud does not lift it. These mats are not machine washable, and they should not go in a tumble dryer.

Common questions
How many mats are in a set?
Four: two for the front footwells, driver and passenger side, and two for the rear.
Do I have to cut them to fit?
They arrive trimmed for most cars. If a corner rides up, cut along the guide line printed on the underside of the mat — kitchen scissors are enough, and you can trim again if you cut too little the first time.
Can I put them on top of the mats my car came with?
No. One layer only. Two stacked mats can bunch up under the brake pedal, which is exactly the failure the rubber backing is there to prevent. Take the factory mats out first.
Carpet or rubber mats?
Factory carpet mats look better and hold water; rubber-backed mats stay put, wipe clean and do not keep the smell of a wet winter. Our printed mats are a printed surface bonded to a rubber backing, so you get the grip and the print.
How do I clean them?
Shake them out, hose them down or wipe with a damp cloth. The print is bonded into the surface and will not peel. They are not machine washable.
